Tips for Show Preparation

Tail, wash in the 4 weeks leading up to a show, 1-2 times per week and keep bagged. This is especially good as you are not trying to scrub a brown Stained tail the night before. Using a de-tangler after a wash helps condition too.

Legs, to help repel dirt when washing the night before, applying baby powder to wet legs and let dry. In the morning a good brush with a firm soft bristled brush will remove a lot of surface dirt.

Practice makes perfect, showing can be very rewarding but can also be stressful when things go wrong. – practice, practice and practice some more! Before you get to the show make sure your horse can trot out beside you freely and stand square. Have someone walk around him/her as a judge would, without fidgeting too much. Like anything, this takes time but will be worth the hard work. This advice is especially applicable to a young horses and those new to showing or even seasoned show people with a new partnership, the time together is not only educating but is great for bond. Having a prepared horse makes it a pleasant and relaxed outing for all.

Arrive early, if you can. This allows you time to spot clean any grass/manure stains that may happen. Yes even the horses rugged from head to toe will have something that needs cleaning once you arrive. This also is gives you horse a chance to settle with all the excitement and activity.

And lastly, the most importantly, Smile, have fun and always, always thank the judge and congratulate the winner.
